I realised I hadn't done much macro, water photography for a while which is something I used to spend a lot of time doing - so I decided to setup something in my bathroom and have a play. It took me a while to remember all the little bits and pieces I used to do to make the shot more appealing, but after a few 100 photos, I managed to get this one which I quite like. The colours came from 2 coloured CD covers that I placed in the basin, and the droplets were pure luck (as is the case with most liquid photography).

EXIF

Focal Length: 100 mm
Exposure: 1/1000 sec
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 100

  • Reminds me of the guestblog shot you contributed to my blog previously :)

I just got my hands on the Canon 100mm macro lens over last weekend and am keen to try out what you did. What did you do the achieve focus for such a shallow depth of field? I presume you used manual pre-focusing, but how did you manage to make the splash-drop occur at the spot you wanted?

  • Engloy: Its a lovely lens, even for portrait work as well as macro. I'm sure you'll love it :)

As for the focusing, it was manual yes, and I just took shot after shot after shot, till I got that lucky one where the drop hit the sweet focused spot. I'm sure overall I shot about 500 before I got this one :)

  • Lovely shot. I'm having fun trying to pick out your reflection in the droplets.. is that the top of your head?

  • No dude - I think you're just seeing the CD cover reflections.. Fairly sure I don't appear anywhere!
